AI is genuinely good at getting you oriented in an unfamiliar subject, and genuinely bad at being your only source.

Entering an unfamiliar subject is the case where AI helps most, and the case where over-trusting it costs most. Both are true at once.

What it is genuinely good at

Orientation. You do not know what the parts are called, so you cannot search for them. A model will give you the vocabulary, the rough map, and the names of the major positions in about a minute. That is enough to start reading real sources with some idea of what you are looking at.

Explaining at your level. "Explain this as if I know statistics but not biology" works, and it works repeatedly, at different levels, without impatience. That is a real advantage over a textbook fixed at one level.

Reframing. When an explanation does not land, asking for a different angle — an analogy, a worked example, the historical reason it is done this way — often does what re-reading the same paragraph will not.

The trap

The same fluency that makes explanations useful makes errors invisible. In a subject you do not know, you cannot tell a solid explanation from a confident fabrication. There is no textural difference. This is precisely the situation where you have the least ability to detect the failure, and it is the situation you are in whenever you use AI to learn something new.

Use it to test yourself, not to replace yourself

The strongest study use is the least obvious one. Reading an AI summary feels efficient and produces almost no durable understanding, because you never had to retrieve anything.

Instead:

  • Ask it to quiz you, then answer before reading on
  • Explain the concept back and ask where your explanation is wrong or incomplete
  • Ask for the counterargument to something you just accepted
  • Ask what a beginner usually gets wrong here, and check whether you are doing it

Every one of these makes you produce something. That is what builds understanding.

A workable research habit

  1. Use the model to orient and to build a vocabulary
  2. Use that vocabulary to find primary sources yourself
  3. Feed the actual sources back and ask for comparison and synthesis
  4. Verify every specific claim you intend to reuse

Steps one and three are where it earns its place. Step two is the one people skip, and skipping it is what turns a research tool into a fabrication engine.
