A setting controlling how much randomness is used when picking each next token.
In more depth
Low values make the model almost always take its most likely token: repeatable and conservative. Higher values sample more widely: more varied, more creative, more prone to wandering.
It changes selection, not knowledge. Lowering it makes a model more consistent, not more accurate.
